I met Isabell Steinert for the first time a day before I gave birth. I was already in labor when she came to our home, some two hours away from where she stays in the Philippines, along with my midwives, Deborah and Lornie.
Several weeks back, Deborah showed me photos Isabell took of another home water birth. I thought then that it would be nice to have something like it for my baby’s birth too so I was thrilled when she confirmed she can make it.
At first, I was a bit anxious about having a complete stranger take photos of this intimate moment. It turned out, however, she’s a pleasure to be around. She’s not intrusive at all. In fact, most of the time, I barely notice she’s taking pictures. She’s also good with kids and my four-year-old enjoyed smiling for the camera too.
It’s a great delight looking at the beautiful photos. They allow me to relive the hours counting down to the birth in a whole new perspective. I love how they not only captured pregnant and laboring me, but also documented my family as they went about the day in eager anticipation.
Our family met Isabell again during our postnatal visit to Shiphrah Birthing Home. This time, we’re able to appreciate the work she does as a missionary for HELP International Ministries. I especially admire her dedication to the kids at The Little Children’s Home – giving them the love and attention they deserve.
Our baby’s home water birth is an amazing experience our family would cherish for the rest of our lives. We’re blessed to have had someone with both the talent and the passion to chronicle it.
